Best Holster for an FN 509: Compact, Midsize, and Tactical Fit Guide

By Badass Holster Co. · November 4, 2026 · Veteran-owned gear guides

The FN 509 is a solid, well-built pistol with a thin holster aftermarket. The Tactical version, which is what a lot of people own, adds a threaded barrel and a taller sight package that breaks a lot of otherwise fine holsters.

The 509 family is three different guns in a holster

ModelBarrelNotes
509 Compact~3.7"Most concealable
509 Midsize~4"The carry sweet spot
509 Tactical~4.5" + threadedThreaded barrel, tall sights, optic-ready
509 Edge / LS Edge~4.5"Long-slide performance models

Nothing in that list swaps into another's holster cleanly.

The Tactical problem, specifically

Three features break standard holsters:

Buy rule for a 509 Tactical: get a holster explicitly listed as Tactical-compatible with a threaded-barrel cut and optic relief. A standard 509 holster will fit the gun enough to feel plausible and fail you at retention.

What to look for on any 509

1. 509-specific molding

FN's frame and trigger guard geometry are not Glock or SIG compatible. Generic "fits 500 models" holsters give you trigger guard gaps on a pistol with a short trigger.

2. Full trigger guard coverage

Non-negotiable. Complete enclosure, no gap at the muzzle end or the frame junction.

3. Retention adjustment

The 509 is a substantial pistol with 15 or 17 rounds. You want a retention screw, tested with the gun upside down and shaken, not just snug friction.

4. Belt and attachment

Full-weight carry package. A proper gun belt and wide attachment footprint keep it from rolling.

Carrying the 509 Compact

The compact is the realistic concealed-carry 509: 3.7-inch slide, 12 or 15 rounds, and a full grip. Strong-side with a slight forward cant works well. Appendix is possible with a wedge, though the pistol is thicker than a micro-compact class gun.

Carrying the 509 Tactical

Most people run a Tactical with a dot and often a suppressor. If you run a suppressor, the holster conversation changes entirely — you need a holster that will clear the can or you need to accept removing the can for carry. Decide which before buying.

Common questions

Will a Glock 19 holster fit an FN 509?

Not reliably. The frame and trigger guard differ. A holster cut for a Glock 19 leaves gaps or binds on the FN trigger guard and will not retain correctly.

Does the FN 509 Tactical fit standard 509 holsters?

No. The threaded barrel is longer and the suppressor-height sights are taller, so you need a Tactical-specific holster with a threaded-barrel cut and sight relief.

Can I carry a 509 with a red dot?

Yes, with an optic-cut holster that clears the optic housing. The Tactical models are commonly run with a dot.

Is the FN 509 good for concealed carry?

The Compact and Midsize models are. The Tactical and full-size models are excellent pistols but substantially harder to conceal.

What holster works with a suppressed 509?

Only holsters designed to clear the suppressor, or carry without the can attached. Most carry holsters will not accept a mounted suppressor.
