Best Holster for a Springfield XD-S: Single-Stack Carry, Done Seriously

By Badass Holster Co. · November 4, 2026 · Veteran-owned gear guides

The XD-S is a slim single stack with a grip safety — a feature that changes how you draw and therefore how your holster should be shaped.

Which XD-S do you have

ModelBarrelCaliberNotes
XD-S 3.3"3.3"9mm / .45 ACPOriginal single stack
XD-S Mod.2 3.3"3.3"9mm / .45 ACPRevised frame texture and profile
XD-S Mod.2 4.0"4.0"9mmLonger slide

The .45 ACP and 9mm versions are the same footprint at the slide and frame rails, so most XD-S holsters work across both calibers — but the Mod.2 frame is not identical to the original. Confirm the specific variant.

The grip safety and your holster

The XD-S has a grip safety on the rear of the frame that must be depressed for the pistol to fire. That means your hand must achieve a full, high grip every time — and it means the holster must not interfere with the web of your hand seating on the safety.

Practice test: unloaded pistol in the holster, from concealment, draw and press the grip safety fully ten times. If you cannot consistently defeat it on the draw, change the holster or the cant.

What to look for

1. XD-S-specific molding

The XD-S has a distinctive trigger guard and grip safety housing. A holster molded for an XD or XD-M will not fit correctly — those are double stacks with different frame widths.

2. Full trigger guard coverage

Standard requirement. Complete enclosure with no gaps at the muzzle end or frame junction.

3. Retention that holds a light pistol firmly

The XD-S is light for its class. A loose holster lets it shift, which changes the draw angle and makes the grip safety harder to hit. Snug mold plus adjustable retention screw.

4. Cant and ride height

3.3-inch barrel, short grip. A forward cant of 15 degrees at 3–4 o'clock tucks the grip well. Appendix with zero cant works and is comfortable because of the short slide.

XD-S vs Shield Plus vs Glock 43X

PistolBarrelCapacityStandout feature
XD-S Mod.23.3"7 to 9+1Grip safety, .45 option
Shield Plus3.1"10+1 / 13+1Higher capacity
Glock 43X3.41"10+1Glock magazine ecosystem

The XD-S wins on grip safety preference and caliber options. It loses on capacity against the Shield Plus and 43X. That is the trade, and it is a deliberate one for people who want an external passive safety.

Common questions

Will an XD or XD-M holster fit an XD-S?

No. The XD and XD-M are double stacks with wider frames. The XD-S needs its own holster.

Does the grip safety affect holster choice?

It can. A tall sweat guard or an awkward cant can prevent you from fully depressing the grip safety on the draw. Test your draw with the actual holster.

Will a 9mm XD-S holster fit the .45 version?

Usually yes, since the slide and frame rails are the same footprint. Confirm the holster lists both calibers or test retention.

Is the XD-S good for appendix carry?

Yes. The 3.3-inch barrel is short enough to be comfortable seated, and zero cant works well.

Can I put a red dot on an XD-S?

Only with a slide cut. Most factory XD-S pistols are not optic-ready, so it requires aftermarket work before a holster matters.
