Home / Guides / Best Holster for a Smith & Wesson Shield Plus: Slim, Reliable, Misunderstood
The Shield Plus fixed the one thing people complained about on the original Shield — capacity — without making the gun wider. It is 1.1 inches thick with 10+1 rounds on board. That is a genuinely good carry gun, and a holster that fits it properly is not automatic.
A 3.1-inch barrel, a slim single-stack-plus frame, and 10 or 13 rounds depending on the magazine. The thumb safety is optional, which matters for holster fit more than people realize.
It sits in a crowded class with the P365, the 43X, and the Hellcat. What sets the Shield Plus apart is the grip shape and the trigger — and for holster buyers, a barrel and dust cover profile that is not shared with anything else.
An original Shield holster will accept a Shield Plus slide — they share the same barrel and slide dimensions — but the frames differ around the magazine release and grip. Confirm that retention engages on the Plus frame, not just that the gun drops in.
If your Shield Plus has the manual safety, the holster body must clear it in both positions without dragging. A holster cut for a no-safety model can bind against the lever and either block the safety or wear it loose.
Several Shield Plus configurations are optic-ready. Confirm the holster is cut for the specific optic, and that the red dot does not contact the holster during the draw.
With a 3.1-inch barrel, the Shield Plus sits low. A 15-degree cant at 3–4 o'clock is the default good answer. Appendix works very well because the short slide does not dig in when seated.
| Magazine | Capacity | Grip height | Carry verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flush | 10 | Shortest | Best for concealment |
| Extended | 13 | +~0.5" | Range and spare mag |
That half-inch of grip is the entire printing difference between the Shield Plus and a much larger pistol. Carry the flush mag and you get concealment; carry the 13 and you get capability. Either is defensible — just know which one you told your shirt about.
| Pistol | Width | Barrel | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shield Plus | ~1.1" | 3.1" | 10+1 / 13+1 |
| SIG P365 | ~1.0" | 3.1" | 10+1 |
| Hellcat | ~1.0" | 3" | 11+1 |
| Glock 43X | ~1.0" | 3.41" | 10+1 |
The Shield Plus is the heaviest pull of the group in a good way: the grip fills the hand, the trigger is predictable, and the gun has a long track record behind it. A tenth of an inch of width is a fair trade.
Often yes, since the slide and barrel dimensions are the same, but retention can be loose around the Plus frame. Confirm the gun holds firmly when turned upside down before trusting an old holster.
No. Different slide profile and dust cover shape. The Shield Plus will not seat or retain correctly.
Yes — the 3.1-inch barrel and slim grip make it one of the more comfortable appendix options. A wedge helps if you carry Deep.
Carry the 10-round flush magazine for best concealment and keep the 13 as a spare. The extended magazine adds about half an inch of grip height, which is what prints.
Yes. Verify the holster clears the safety lever in both positions. A no-safety cut can bind against the lever.
