Home / Guides / Best Holster for a Ruger LCP: The Pocket Gun Done Right
The LCP is a 9-ounce .380 designed for one thing: being present when nothing else would be. The holster matters more than the gun, because this is the pistol most likely to be carried in a pocket full of other objects.
| Model | Capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LCP (original) | 6+1 | Long double-action trigger |
| LCP II | 6+1 | Shorter, lighter trigger, different frame |
| LCP MAX | 10+1 | Wider frame, taller grip — not an LCP fit |
The MAX in particular needs its own holster. It is a bigger pistol than the original LCP in every dimension that matters to a holster.
A pocket holster is not a pouch. It has four jobs:
| Material | Best for | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Kydex / hard polymer | Positive trigger coverage, consistent draw | Can wear pocket fabric over time |
| Leather | Thin, quiet, comfortable | Can soften and collapse with sweat |
| Nylon / sticky | Cheap, grippy | Collapses; trigger coverage often poor |
For an LCP, a rigid pocket holster with an anti-print panel is the safe answer. Leather works if it holds shape and covers the trigger entirely.
Six rounds of .380 in a pistol with a short sight radius is not a duty gun. It is a "better than nothing" gun, and that is a legitimate category. Roughly 60% of the value is the pistol being light enough that you actually carry it. The other 40% is the holster keeping it safe in your pocket all day.
Train with it. An LCP with a long trigger pull, a small grip, and no sights takes real practice to shoot at seven yards. Fifty rounds a month is not a lot to ask.
A rigid pocket holster with full trigger guard coverage and an anti-print panel for pocket carry, or a small Kydex inside-the-waistband holster for appendix carry.
Not well. The LCP II has a different frame and a shorter, lighter trigger. Confirm the holster lists LCP II specifically.
No. The MAX is wider with a taller grip and needs its own holster.
No. A loose pistol in a pocket can pick up keys, coins, or a phone onto the trigger. A holster that fully encloses the trigger guard is essential.
The LCP and LCP II have a long track record as backup and deep-concealment pistols. Reliability improves with ammunition the pistol likes and periodic maintenance — test your carry load.
