Best Holster for a Glock 19: What Actually Works for Daily Carry

By Badass Holster Co. · October 29, 2026 · Veteran-owned gear guides

The Glock 19 is the most-carried pistol in America, which means there are roughly four thousand holsters claiming to be built for it. Most of them work. The problem isn't finding a holster — it's buying the right one the first time instead of the third.

What makes the Glock 19 worth holstering properly

The 19 sits in a sweet spot: big enough to shoot well, small enough to actually carry. It's roughly 7.4 inches long with a 4-inch barrel and a full three-finger grip. That grip is what makes the 19 shootable — and it's also the part that prints.

Any holster that claims to fit the 19 should handle all generations, plus the 19X and the 45, since they share the same slide and frame footprint. If a holster only lists "Gen 3–5," expect fit issues with the 19X.

The five things that actually matter

1. Trigger guard coverage

Non-negotiable. The holster must fully enclose the trigger guard. Not most of it — all of it. This is the single safety feature that matters more than every other design choice combined.

2. Retention that's adjustable, not marketing

You should be able to turn a loaded, holstered Glock 19 upside down and shake it without the gun dropping out. It should also release cleanly on a proper draw with no fumbling. If you can't adjust retention, you're stuck with whatever the manufacturer decided you should want.

3. Cant and ride height

Cant is the angle the gun sits at. A forward cant pushes the grip back toward your ribs, which conceals better at 3–4 o'clock. Zero cant works better appendix. Adjustable cant is the difference between a holster that fits your body and one that almost does.

4. Red-dot clearance

If there's an RMR or Holosun on your 19, the holster needs to be cut for it. A holster that pinches the optic will shift your zero over time or prevent full seating. Check this before you buy, not after.

5. Sweat and wear resistance

An IWB holster lives against your body in summer heat. Kydex handles this well. Leather needs care. Either can work — just know what you're signing up for.

The mistake that costs the most money: buying a holster for the Glock 19 you own today without checking whether it also fits the pistol you'll buy in two years. A universal-fit holster that covers 90%+ of pistols means you buy once.

Carrying a Glock 19 with a light

The 19 is a popular host for a weapon light, and that changes the holster requirement entirely. A light adds bulk beyond the frame and trigger guard, so a standard holster won't accept it. You need either a light-bearing holster cut for that specific light model, or a wide-body design with extra clearance.

If you're running a TLR-1, TLR-7, or an X300, buy for the light — not for the gun. Holsters are cut to the light body, and a holster for a TLR-7 will not accept a TLR-1.

IWB or OWB for the 19?

IWB for daily concealed carry. The 19 conceals well inside the waistband at 3–4 o'clock or appendix, especially with a slight cant. OWB for cold weather, open carry states, range days, and classes — and it works well for anyone who finds IWB pressure uncomfortable.

A holster that converts between both gives you the entire usable range from one purchase. That's the Glock 19 setup we build: adjustable clip and cant, left or right hand, red-dot ready.

How the 19 compares to other carry pistols

PistolBarrelConcealmentShootability
Glock 194.02"Very good with a cantExcellent — full grip
Glock 43X3.41"ExcellentGood — shorter grip
Glock 263.43"ExcellentFair — two-finger grip
Glock 174.49"FairExcellent
SIG P3653.1"ExceptionalGood

The 19 is the best all-around compromise on that list. It carries nearly as well as a 43X and shoots nearly as well as a 17.

Common questions

Does a Glock 19 holster fit a Glock 19X or 45?

Usually yes, since all three share the same frame and slide footprint. Confirm the holster lists the 19X and 45 explicitly, because some holsters are cut only for the standard 19 slide profile.

Will a Gen 5 holster fit a Gen 3 Glock 19?

In almost all cases yes — the external dimensions are effectively unchanged. Ambidextrous slide stop levers on Gen 5 guns can occasionally interfere with a tight holster, so test retention if you're mixing generations.

Can I carry a Glock 19 appendix?

Yes, and many people do. It generally works best for leaner builds and taller shooters. A wedge and a zero-cant holster help, and a proper gun belt is mandatory.

How much should a good Glock 19 holster cost?

Between $60 and $130 gets you a well-made, adjustable holster with real retention. Below that, you're usually sacrificing rigidity or retention adjustment. Above it, you're mostly paying for branding.

Does the holster fit a Glock 19 with a red dot?

Only if it's cut for optics. Most modern holsters are, but check — an optic-cut holster is specifically relieved around the slide to clear an RMR or Holosun without contacting it.
